A message from MVCA President:
MVCA was created after I connected with Carol Jordan (MVCA Vice President) on meetup.com and learned we shared the same dream for our community, which is to have an Art Center in Amsterdam, that can
provide a venue for showing art, a means to unite the various local art communities and organizations, and to be able to make art accessible to everyone.
We do not define our membership or have membership requirements. We have visual artists, including photographers, sculptors, painters and the like. We have musicians and composers. We have writers, thespians, dancers, and crafters of all kinds. We have people who do not create art in any form but support the arts and our mission. We welcome everyone.
MVCA has met twice a month since January 2011, when we named and declared ourselves into existence.
In March 2011, we elected a governing board consisting of a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.
In June, we created committees to oversee ongoing projects and those Project Chairs have become part of our governing board. These projects are:
1. Administration and organizational set up – which I Chair, charged with the task of completing the not for profit paperwork, business plan, and other important processes
2. Art show – organizing a show for the fall of 2012
3. Local arts support – to research other local groups’ activities/events and to support them in any way we can; including, but not limited to, participation, volunteering, networking and promoting their events/activities
4. Summer enrichment classes – to organize and run summer community art classes, when possible
We are formally a DBA, have applied for grants, have volunteered in the art community and have many members who have had works in shows during the year.
During 2011 we have also grown from 4 women sitting in a diner to 30 members (who do not all attend at once) and many other "followers" who express interest but haven't come to a meeting or joined us yet.
We meet at 7 pm the last two Mondays of every month
at the Coffee Beanery in Amsterdam, New York.
In 2011 we had business meeting one of the Monday's and a guest speaker the other Monday, however our growth, and our desire to recognize and fulfill needs in the artist community, have caused us to change our format in 2012.
IN 2012...
Exciting and new format to our meetings!!! We recognized that creative people need to socialize with each other more. That they need to share creative ideas more. That they need support from others who understand the struggle it can be to motivate, to create, to work through a creative block. So...
The second to last Monday of the month at 7 pm in The Coffee Beanery in Amsterdam, New York we will gather together for a CREATIVE CHALLENGE.
This format is meant to be fun (so please do not take it too seriously).
First, a brief topic will be discussed to establish definitions for the month's challenge and a concept will be presented that will cross all genres of the arts. Then the Challenge will be given to the group. Questions will be answered. All who attend do not have to participate. Some may want to attend to hear the presentation but not want to participate in the challenge and that would be fun too.
Participant should come back to the next month's first meeting to "show and tell" their outcomes. A group critique will be encouraged.
The last Monday of the month at 7 pm in The Coffee Beanery in Amsterdam, New York we will gather together with a SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER!!!
Guest speakers will be artist and/or creative people who will share about their area of experience. We will announce ahead of time who and what topic they will be speaking on, when we can. But surprises can be fun too.
We would love to see you there!!!
~Jessica
