Discussion: Define Emphasis
o Emphasis is a principle of art which occurs any time an element of a piece is given dominance by the artist. In other words, the artist makes part of the work stand out.
o particular prominence given in reading or speaking to one or more words or syllables, or in written works, to lay out a sentence in such a way that when read it gives prominence to one or more words or syllables
o special consideration of or stress or insistence on something
Synonyms: accent, accentuation, stress, underscoring, weight
Visual (including crafts):
Contrast a shape with its surroundings using dark/light values, texture, temperature of hues, or color
Focus attention with converging lines
Isolate the object you want to emphasize
Music:
Crescendo
Rhythm – building or emphasis on a particular beat (waltz)
Isolate the sound you wish to emphasize
A surprise, unexpected moment, startles
Literature/poetry:
Climax, building the reader to an intentionally emphasized one or more words or syllables (in poems) or paragraphs (in stories)
