Balance

and discussed at MVCA Meeting on May 21, 2012 at 7 pm.
Discussion:      
Define
            Balance 
1. a
state of equilibrium or counterpoise.; equal distribution of weight, amount,
etc. 
2.
mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment,
etc. 
Symmetrical - Mirror image
1. being such that the terms or
variables may be interchanged without altering the value, character, or truth 
2.
capable of division by a longitudinal plane into similar halves <symmetrical
plant parts> b : having the same number of members in each
whorl of floral leaves <symmetrical flowers> 
Asymmetrical – Opposite of Symmetrical… still able to be
balanced 
Visual
(including crafts):             
Mirror image – Identical halves/quarters of image (or
asymmetrical)
Use of color, value, object and shape placement
Music:   
            Weighted measures – composition is
weighted the same on either side of a crescendo
            Binary form < Baroque period
minuet> 
Literature/poetry:          
Constructing a
sentence so that both halves are about the same length and importance
Balancing a
composition
Dance/movement:
Literal – to perform a movement
that requires balance 
Balance of the overall
choreography use of binary form
Acting:
            Performing a balanced soliloquy
            Tone of voice <loud, quiet,
loud>
